In depth

Verdict

A very tough and well-contested opening maiden, but Collateral Damage has shown enough to suggest he can win a race like this and he gets the vote ahead of Radius, Dawaleeb and Ruby Rubble. Tim Easterby's colt stuck gamely to his task when a close second to Mutamarres at Chester on soft ground last time, having earlier shaped well on good to firm ground at Haydock and on the sand at Southwell. Collateral Damage did seem to improve on his first try at this seven furlong trip, and he seems sure to go close here. David Loder's Radius is a nicely bred type by Lujain, who showed speed early on his debut at Newmarket and is probably capable of a good deal better with that under his belt. More of a threat could be Dawaleeb, an Alhaarth filly trained by Marcus Tregoning who ran into all sorts of trouble on her only start at Pontefract and is almost certainly capable of a good deal better here. Ruby Rubble came up against a smart type when a remote third to Zaal on her debut at Carlisle on firm ground, and also showed signs of ability, but for the opener we just side with the more solid form claims of Collateral Damage.
