In depth

Verdict

Son Of Thunder makes plenty of appeal for an each-way play in the finale, while Apache Point, Dispol Veleta and Charlie Tango are others to monitor in the betting. Charlie Tango is a previous course winner that will handle the ground. The conditions will be more to his liking than the last time he raced over hurdles and he should give a good account of himself today. Dispol Veleta came good round this time last year and is well treated on the pick of her form. She is fit from the all weather and can play an adequate supporting role. Apache Point has a habit of popping up in races like this and is dangerous to rule out. He is on a winning mark and, as he should have benefited from his reappearance run, he can also go close if he is in the mood. However, the same needs to be said of Son Of Thunder, who won off 61 last season. Now 4lb lower in the handicap, Michael Dodds' charge has a live chance at the weights and is expected to be more like the finished article now that he has another year on his back.
