Verdict

It is impossible to know how good the form is of the springer in the ante-post market US Ranger, who was impressive when making a winning return at Maisons-Laffitte, and he may be best watched with preference for Adagio who gets the vote ahead of Haatef and Major Cadeaux. The last mentioned looked useful when beating the better fancied Dutch Art on his reappearance in Newbury's Greenham Stakes and there could be plenty more to come from Richard Hannon's lightly raced colt. Strategic Prince has arguably the best form of these having landed the Vintage Stakes prior to maybe finding conditions too testing when a creditable third in the Dewhurst. Paul Cole's colt has not been seen since then though and it is impossible to know whether he has progressed from two to three. Diamond Tycoon was an impressive winner of a Newbury maiden on his return and he is clearly a colt of some ability but this represents a huge step up in class and of more interest may be Kevin Prendergast's Haatef, who is closely matched with Strategic Prince on running in the Dewhurst. Adagio could not have been much more impressive when making a winning return in the Craven Stakes last month though, a route that Sir Michael Stoute has taken before with subsequent 2,000 Guineas winners, and he is taken to supplement that success by taking the first classic of the season.
