In depth

Verdict

Longspur may prove good enough to beat the likes of Russian Invader, Tropical Strait and Theta. The selection ran green on his Leicester bow in July, but still managed to finish a creditable third, and showed that he stays 12-furlongs when a close second at Newmarket next time, just ahead of the favourite Coyote Creek. Ted Durcan has ridden both times, but Frankie Dettori takes over now, and this big baby of a horse is taken to have learned sufficiently to make it third time lucky. Russian Invader stayed on well behind Soul Mountain on his Haydock debut, and although the form has since been let down, he can only improve. Tropical Strait ran in snatches at Lingfield, and he was a bit unlucky-in-running as well, so is worth a mention, while Theta will come on for his Doncaster return, and is another that will appreciate the step up in trip on breeding. For the winner though we return to Longspur.
