In depth

Verdict

Captain Oscar sets the standard and is consequently selected; the market should help sort out the wheat from the chaff but Reasontobecheerful and Bishops Ploy are two of the more interesting newcomers. The selection ran a huge race on debut in going down by just a length to the well regarded and talented Mad Max. He never looked like getting past the winner but the third was 11 lengths in arrears and it was a distinctly useful performance. Midnight Sail was around 8 lengths behind the same horse on his final outing so clearly has work to do to get the better of the selection but he has ability and is from a yard going well. Dover's Hill and Delayed Approach are others to have shown ability but they need to improve to trouble the selection if he reproduces his debut form. There are several interesting newcomers in the field to whom the market should guide but Captain Oscar should be able to lead them home.
