In depth

Verdict

KAPTAIN KIRKUP may only have won by a neck in a nursery over course and distance on his latest start in July but the Michael Dods-trained colt found plenty of trouble in running that day so a 5lb rise is perfectly fair and he can follow up, getting the verdict ahead of Sea Lord and Bluie. The last mentioned looks the pick of the two runners from the yard of David Nicholls in the race over Layla's Hero having won his last three starts, latterly in a nursery at Hamilton, but a 7lb rise for that makes this tougher. Richard Hannon's Dubai Set opened his account in a Lingfield maiden well enough last time but he seems plenty high enough for his debut in a nursery and of more interest may be Yaa Wayl. The Michael Jarvis-trained colt is less exposed than most of his opponents after just two starts but he will need to step up on the form shown when winning a Thirsk maiden last time to win this. Peter Winkwirth's Marcus Cicero is similarly unexposed and is another to consider along with recent Ripon winner Tasmeem, who represents Barry Hills. Mark Johnston's Sea Lord could be of interest dropping into this grade having been outclassed in the Group 3 Acomb Stakes last time but Kaptain Kirkup has solid claims of following up his recent success here and is taken to do just that.
