In depth

Verdict

In a tricky race, the vote goes to Makshoof ahead of Parisian Dream and Sandrey. With his form rating in the low 70s, Makshoof looks set to play a prominent part in today's race given his experience and on the balance of his form. Mark Johnston's Eau Good has to get a mention based on breeding and overall profile and maybe the market will guide, while Effigy has reasonable breeding and, based on his sire being Effisio, holds every chance of handling the going (which was good to soft at the time of writing but with more rain forecast). Barry Hills' 30,000 guineas son of Sakhee, Parisian Dream, has to be considered on his debut, while Rudry Dragon appeared to get the hang of things late on his Newmarket debut and he is not without a chance. Peter Chapple-Hyam's 32,000 guineas son of Noverre, Sandrey, is another to consider, along with Richard Fahey's Smart Angus, who looks to be the stronger of his pair of entries. Finally, Willie Jarvis's Trepa has more of a dirt-based bloodline, although the market should guide, and Howard Johnson's Tarraburn has not quite shown enough to be given a strong shout, although soft going, if it works out that way, can, of course, be a great leveller. Overall, though, we will give Makshoof another chance.
