Verdict

Always one of the features of this great meeting, the 2009 renewal of the Goodwood Cup does not disappoint and SCHIAPARELLI is just preferred win it for the boys in blue, while Askar Tau, Caracciola and Enroller should have their say. A win for Caracciola would be a tremendous effort for the former Nicky Henderson inmate, who is now officially trained by the in-form Barry Hills. At 12 years of age he maintains tremendous enthusiasm for his sport and will want every yard of this two miles. He acts well on good or faster ground and he should run a big race once again. Askar Tau has not been seen since disappointing in Caracciola's Cesarewitch last year, having preceded that with five off the reel to rocket through the handicap. Marcus Tregoning has given him plenty of time but this is a tough ask first time back, and he has not won on two previous attempts when fresh. Mourilyan stays this far and has his first run here for Gary Moore, but with the yard strangely out of form it is hard to exude confidence over his chances. Enroller would be more interesting if the ground came up soft, and he is perhaps just short of enough class to win at this level, but Schiaparelli looks a better proposition. Godolphin have not yet looked to tap into the reserves of stamina on his dam's side, but this former Italian Derby winner scored on his only try over 1m 6f and is now given the licence to show us his wares over an extreme trip. An excellent effort in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket last time means he should be spot on for this. He is the highest-rated on official BHA figures and being unexposed at the trip we will take Schiaparelli to come home in front.
