In depth

Verdict

YARRA RIVER, Branderburgo and Dubawi Phantom are the three that stand out on form with Sea Lord the more interesting of the two newcomers. Andrew Balding's juveniles appear to be in tip-top form so we'll take his son of Dr Fong to fulfil the promise of his debut second to the useful Lucky General. He did finish a respectful 6 lengths behind his more experienced rival but can reasonably be expected to have improved for the outing and is unlikely to bump into anything with that ability in this field. Sea Lord and Saint Thomas are the unknown quantities with the former looking the more likely of the pair although both will need a stiffer test in the fullness of time. The Master of Kingsclere also has a handy line on the form of one of his principal rivals as he saddled the winner of the maiden in which Branderburgo took third at Sandown; this was a more encouraging run from the Botti runner who had attracted support on debut and he has the ability to go close to winning. Dubawi Phantom has lost ground at the start on all three visits to the track and that probably proved costly in the closing stages at Newmarket as he ran out of steam in the final yards. He merits respect but another tardy start could hand the advantage to his rivals. Deauville Post wasn't far behind him at Sandown and could easily improve past the Simcock runner, particularly as he had been favourably mentioned in dispatches prior to his debut. He has to be feared but we'll take Yarra River to prevail.
