In depth

Verdict

Tragic Ohio won on Friday so will probably not run here so, with that in mind, we opt for Global Challenge ahead Celtic Major, Forzacurity, East Lawyer, Waverley, Red Ruffles and Le Rochelais. Formerly with Sir Michael Stoute, the selection suffered a cracked cannon bone. However, he is steadily progressing with each hurdling run and ought to go well at this level. The same stable also runs Celtic Major, and he too catches they eye as a nominee for the shortlist of possibles. Maniatis won well at Uttoxeter but then got stuck in the mud at the same track last time out. Forzacurity should go on the going and is another for the shortlist, while French scorer, East Lawyer, although having shown little so far for Paul Nicholls in two runs in this country, might show in a better light at this level. Red Ruffles has form enough to be competitive in a run-of-the-mill novices' hurdle. Waverley has the basic talent to be seriously considered here but he has never won on going this soft in each of his four Flat wins. Watch the betting for the Robert Alner-trained French import Le Rochelais but, in a race that lacks overall strength, we will side with Jonjo O'Neill and Global Challenge.
