In depth

Verdict

River Card can beat Bond Puccini and Lady Vee, with both Lord John and Canary Dancer worth noting in the market. This looks another close one to call, but River Card put in a pleasing performance on her return at Nottingham in April, belying her odds of 100-1 to finish fourth to the odds-on Kenmore. Although set to carry 9st 2lb here, Mark Tompkins' filly should continue to progress and gets the vote over Bond Puccini. The latter was fancied at Hamilton last time but found little in the race won by Straffan, and although the step up in trip and faster ground may help, he does not make great appeal. Lady Vee opened her account on the Wolverhampton Polytrack last time but has more to do, while Lord John is on a retrieval mission, having been sent off favourite here last time. Mick Easterby's supporters groaned as he missed the break, but with that seasonal return behind him, he should not be ruled out with the blinkers on again and a furlong longer to travel. First-time cheekpieces saw Canary Dancer put in an improved effort to finish second at Southwell in January, but that was in banded company, and she has been off since, and so we latch on to River Card who has the most improvement to come.
