    Verdict

Arnold Lane overcame greenness to make a winning start at Leicester and that will have done him the world of good. Mitchum attracted strong support on his debut at Southwell and could hardly have been more impressive, coming home virtually alone in the style of a decent youngster. The form hasn't worked out too well but he should still be feared. Cravat won a minor event here before well beaten in a very strong novice event at York in which Hamza ran a cracking race to finish runner-up behind Gatepost. The latter can improve again and must be a threat but those who saw GABRIAL make a very impressive debut at Chester won't want to miss him here and this very much stiffer track is certain to suit him even more as he was staying on strongly at the finish.
