Verdict

CLOSE ONE started favourite on his debut at Sligo but found Some Officer much too strong. The winner is useful and Charlie Swan's charge should have learnt enough to go one better. He receives an age allowance from Alton Bay and that could prove decisive as the latter has just been found wanting at the finish in his runs at Kilbeggan and Killarney. The consistent Spa Hill will be expected to run into a place at least after a good run behind the classy Devils Bride at Tipperary but Jansboy has run moderately since a fair effort behind Bishops Road at Killarney in May.
