In depth

Verdict

Golden Quest has been nursed back to health, and can give Mark Johnston the final say at this year's Royal Meeting, with Baddam, Enjoy The Moment, Junior and Madiba all having the necessary stamina to take a hand. Golden Quest looked to have a bright future in the staying department when narrowly beaten in the 2005 Goodwood Cup, but was then sidelined with a bad knee injury, causing him to miss out the whole of last year. Connections have been patient with him, and have not aimed him too high yet, and he will be all the better for a comeback third in Listed company at Musselburgh. With trip and ground to suit, Golden Quest can start to make up for lost time. If Baddam lines up after his exertions in the Gold Cup on Thursday, then he can prove troublesome. A dual-winner at last year's Royal meeting, he may not be up to Cup class just yet, but has the talent to score at this level that is for sure. Madiba was beaten at Folkestone six-days ago, hardly an eye-catching prep, but he was staying on at the end, while Enjoy The Moment makes a quick return after his unfortunate outing in Tuesday's Ascot Stakes. Badly hampered by Melpomene when making ground on the home turn, he will be staying on from the back under Jamie Osborne, and can reach the frame at least, while of the rest, Junior is weighted to reverse earlier form round here with Ned Ludd in the race won by Princelet. However, they all face a tall order in trying to stop Golden Quest from realising his undoubted potential.
