Verdict

Another chance is given to TUNGSTEN STRIKE to make all the running; he came good at this time of year 12 months ago and can do so once again. Although the Mark Johnston runners are unlikely to be far away, there is the distinct possibility here that the selection may be able to get an uncontested lead. He has had to go too hard too early of late in order to hold pole position but this course and distance winner could run a big race here if able to set his own fractions. Always Bold ran a cracker at Goodwood when beaten behind Sweetheart and this strong-stayer could appreciate this smaller field, Woolfall Treasure was fourth in that race and ran a blinder, whilst Dolly Penrose should appreciate this drop in class but it was still a poor run last time. Cumberland Plate winner Overrule was punished by the handicapper for that win and now looks high enough in the weights, as does Yes Mr President who was second at Carlisle and a gallant fourth at Goodwood since. Bulwark and Gee Dee Nen are both strong-stayers who will need a strong gallop if they are to prevail, something that occurred when the latter won this a year ago, whereas the feeling is that Keenes Day has a bit more of a turn of foot and he should be suited by the better ground this afternoon than in the Northumberland Plate last time out. An open affair, but Tungsten Strike is given another chance to land a blow.
