Bow Creek and an inspired Joe Fanning win the Celebration Mile
Joe Fanning gave Bow Creek a sparkling ride from the front to land the Doom Bar Celebration Mile at Goodwood.
The Mark Johnston-trained three-year-old is a typically tough inmate of the Middleham yard and was third in a Group Three at the Glorious meeting at the start of the month.
Having his seventh start of the campaign, the Shamardal colt (9-2) was still in front three out and by the quarter-mile pole had opened up a definite advantage on Emell.
It was similar story a furlong out, but there was a scare when Fanning's mount began to wander across the track to his left.
Just as it looked like he might throw Group Two honours away, he straightened up and had a length and a half in hand of Emell.
Captain Cat closed late from off the pace to take third as the 9-4 favourite.
Johnston said: "Ryan Moore said he veered left in the Britannia at Ascot, we worked our horses on the track at Ascot so perhaps he knew where the gate was. I don't know what happened this time, but he'd have obviously won very well if he hadn't done it.
"He's had big entries before, we've thought about it, but he's in the QEII. Now he's won a Group Two, I suppose we'll have to go for it."
Rider James Doyle said of Captain Cat: "It was a nightmare of a race and I left him too much to do."
