Oisin Murphy and Absolutely So (yellow silks) take the City of York Stakes.

Absolutely So took the step up from handicap company in his stride when taking the Sky Bet City of York Stakes under Oisin Murphy.

The 6/1 co-favourite for a renewal of the Listed contest made extra-competitive by an injection of prize money that saw £100,000 on offer, he carved his way through the field from halfway to grab pacesetting Glory Awaits just inside the final furlong, going on to score by one and a half lengths.

"He'd have preferred some more ease in the ground, but he got away with it today," said winning jockey Murphy.

Trainer Andrew Balding admitted the prize money had proved a substantial incentive to target the race with the horse, who was atoning for a near-miss in the Bunbury Cup on his previous start and a previous flop in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot.

"When you look through the racing calendar and see £100,000 for that type of race, it does rather stand out," he said.

"This is a nice horse. He's had his problems in the past with sore shins and the like but he's over them now and I hope he can go on from this. He's in the Sprint on British Champions Day at Ascot and we need to decide now whether he has another race or goes straight there."

Glory Awaits kept on well for second place, a length ahead of Glen Moss, who justified long-odds support in third, just ahead of the late-running Gabriel's Lad.
