Clondaw Kaempfer wins under Wayne Hutchinson
Wayne Hutchinson won the Alder Hey Children's Charity Handicap Hurdle aboard Donald McCain's Clondaw Kaempfer at Aintree.
Beaten into 14th in the Coral Cup at the Cheltenham festival, Clondaw Kaempfer bounced back to winning form under a less aggressive ride in Liverpool.
Still prominent, Clondaw Kaempfer took it up at the second last but was overtaken by Caid Du Berlais before the final flight.
However, Hutchinson didn't panic and gathered Clondaw Kaempfer for one final challenge, producing him in the shadows of the post to land the spoils.
Caid Du Berlais finished second with Cash And Go third and Cheltenian fourth.
McCain said: "He's magic. I've not being making the best of jobs with him this season. He was a talented novice last year. He got hurt in the Challow and he was clueless at the start of the season.
"The only way to get him to grow up was to race him. We made too much use of him at Cheltenham and he didn't quite last home, but he learnt something.
"He's come back and has been absolutely flying at home. We've always thought plenty of him and today you see he has a bit of growing up to do.
"He has plenty of ability. Both my horses were up there and there was a loose one galloping up the back of them and this lad has come back with no back shoes.
"It's just been taking time for the penny to drop, but he has loads of ability."
McCain went on: "Richard (Johnson) gave him a good ride at Cheltenham but when your stable jockey (Jason Maguire) is out the day before the Festival it throws a real spanner in the works.
"He might be helped by fences but what we do now I don't know as he couldn't win his point."
