Sue Smith: Continued her tremendous run of form at Newcastle
Pinerolo (9/4) produced a plucky performance to win the Betfred Racing Follow Us On Facebook Novices Chase at Newcastle.
Sadly only four runners faced the starter for the £18500 contest, and Edmund Kean was sent off a warm 10/11 favourite to gain his third success of the campaign.
David Pipe's seven-year-old was content to sit off the pace as Pinerolo made the running under Ryan Mania and Sue Smith's charge did not appear the most willing of leaders as the rider had to administer a couple of reminders from some way out to maintain his interest.
Bucking The Trend was brought through to take the lead and Dougie Costello aimed to forge clear of the pack with four to jump and while the favourite struggled to muster much in response, Pinerolo began to rally with two to jump and ultimately was to gain the better of the argument as the pair fought out a thrilling finish to the opening contest on Newcastle's feature card.
"He had to dig very deep today, Ryan said it was very hard work," said Smith.
"What he does is jump and gallop, on that evidence he'll stay further and we may be back here next year for the Eider."
Tom Scudamore could offer no excuses for the beaten favourite, saying: "He wasn't good enough on the day, no excuses."
