Hanoverian Baron: Collapsed and died
There was a sad postscript to the feature event at Southwell on Thursday as Tony Newcombe's stable stalwart Hanoverian Baron collapsed and died during the race.
The nine-year-old won seven races and amassed over £100,000 in win and place prize-money in a 37-race career, during which he had spells with John Oxx and Dandy Nicholls before joining Newcombe in 2009.
He was a 16-1 shot for the £20,000 Coral Mobile Just Three Clicks To Bet Handicap, but was pulled up by Graham Lee in the back straight.
Victory in the mile-and-a-half contest went to the Alan McCabe-trained Masterful Act, his fifth win from six course starts.
The 5/2 shot dug deep for Tom Queally to get the better of 4/6 favourite Hunting Ground by a neck.
McCabe told At The Races: "He just keeps doing whatever we ask him to do. Tom says he's a confidence horse.
"That was a good race, I think. It was billed as a match race and it turned out (that way), but he won't lie down. I've trained many horses, but this is a monster.
"We're just going to have to sit and wait (for opportunities). I'm convinced he will win on the grass, but conditions have got to be just right for him. He wants good ground - not fast and not soft.
"We're going to have a bit of fun with him and hopefully they'll be putting some races on here for him soon."
