Wychwoods Brook (16-1) provided Evan Williams and Conor Ring with the second leg of a 390-1 double at Haydock with a gritty performance in the Peter Marsh Chase.

The eight-year-old novice was always prominent, and, despite making the odd mistake, kept his pitch as the three-mile-one-furlong slog took its toll.

Vintage Star laid down a strong challenge, but Wychwoods Brook would not be denied and battled away to score by a length and a half.

Merry King made ground to take third, a further neck away.

Ring said: "The day started off a dream, but winning this is just brilliant.

"It was hard work but, to be fair, you have to give this horse all the credit.

"He battled all the way to the line."

Williams was making it an across-the-card five-timer having had three winners at Taunton.
