Philip Enright: Rode Byerley Babe
Byerley Babe got the better of a thrilling duel with Une Artiste to win the Fame And Glory & Sans Frontieres Coolmore National Hunt Sires E.B.F. Mares Novice Chase at Thurles.
Une Artiste was sent off the 6/5 favourite to provide Nicky Henderson with a winner with his first runner at the track but the six year old had to settle for second after going down by a nose in a driving finish.
Byerley Babe had opened her account over the larger obstacles at the second attempt over Christmas and a good leap at the last sealed victory in this Grade Two contest for Robert Tyner's mare.
Winning jockey Philip Enright told At The Races: "I winged the last and I landed in front; she's tough and she's gutsy and she stuck her head out.
"She ran a little left under pressure but until the last two strides I was confident but she's very gutsy and Robert has done a wonderful job with this mare.
"When she won her point-to-point, Robert spoke highly of her and I'm just delighted that she proved it today, all his confidence in her. She was very game and I'm delighted that Mr McManus let me ride her and for Robert as he's always backed me," he added.
The winner was returned at 3/1 with Caoimhe's Delight taking third place at 12/1.
Tyner said: "She got a bit tight to the fourth-last, but I thought she'd sail past them at the next. Phillip said she just drifted a little to the left on the run-in.
"She's a fine, big strong mare who travels well in her races. It was a black type race and a nice pot, so it's great to win it.
"She's not qualified for the next mares' chase back here in a few weeks and she might run next in a Graded race at Limerick on St Patrick's weekend."
