Night Alliance: Ran on strongly

Night Alliance galloped on relentlessly to land the One Stop Energy Tommy Whittle Handicap Chase at Haydock.

Jumping better than has sometimes been the case, the eight year old was well on top at the line in a gruelling renewal of the historic three mile handicap chase.

A number of the field were struggling with a mile still to run as No Planning took the field along at a decent pace but Leighton Aspell could be seen travelling strongly in the leader's slipstream.

Aspell asked his mount to take up the running having negotiated the second last and the 12/1 shot soon opened up a commanding advantage before safely getting to the other side of the last.

There were 11 lengths back to the second, Loch Ba, who denied the gallant No Planning the runner-up's spot in the shadow of the post.

"We'd schooled him at home since Kelso [where he fell] and he'd been fine, but obviously we couldn't be sure if it had a lasting effect," said winning trainer Dr Richard Newland.

"Previously he'd been quite progressive and I'm just glad he's picked up where he left off. It was a nasty fall at Kelso - he could never get into a rhythm there - but it was such a bad fall we could have lost him.

"I don't know where he'll go next, he can run over two-five or three miles and we might look at Cheltenham at the end of January. Another win and he might sneak into a race at the Festival."
