Qawaasem (left) edges past Valonia to score
Qawaasem lived up to Charlie Hills' high expectations when taking the Three Chimneys EBF Maiden under Paul Hanagan.
Hills hopes that he a smart bunch of juveniles this season, especially among the fillies, and the 4/1 chance knuckled down well to get the better of Henry Candy's debutante Valonia by half a length, the pair a long way clear of favourite Oriel.
"We've always liked this filly since she first came to us and the plan was this race, so we wanted to get a run into her on the way here which we did, and it's nice that the plan has paid off," the trainer told Racing UK.
"The ground is plenty quick enough again for her today, but once she hit the rising ground she did it well.
"The second travelled very nicely but I think the racecourse experience helped us.
"We'll probably step up to seven furlongs now, so we might have a look at Goodwood and see what the ground is like there in two or three weeks' time."
