Universal wins the Princess of Wales's Stakes
Universal made all to win the Group Two Princess of Wales's Stakes under Joe Fanning.
The Hardwicke Stakes third was allowed to set his own fractions in front and stayed on strongly from the three-furlong pole to see off allcomers.
Sent off the 3/1 favourite, Fanning's mount answered every question and although Ahzeemah briefly looked as if he might throw down a challenge over a furlong out, the winner went on again and was stretching away at the line to score by two and a half lengths.
"He's very game and travels nicely out the front, I felt he'd kept plenty in the tank at the top of the hill." said Fanning.
"It's hard to believe how much he has improved. Since he came back from Dubai, he has just improved and improved.
"He was bouncing off that ground today and I think he does like a sound surface. When I kicked I thought it would take a good one to get by me."
Universal does hold an entry in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on July 27, but Johnston has other targets in mind.
Johnston said: "He's been fantastic since he came back from Dubai. He ran one
good race there and has been a complete revelation since he returned home.
"It would be very interesting to see this horse over a mile and six furlongs in something like the Irish St Leger. You'd have to think another couple of furlongs would be better for him.
"He's in the King George. The heart says King George, the head would maybe say things like the Irish Leger, the Canadian International and the Japan Cup. Those would be the dreams that are in my head at the moment."
