Lightning Cloud lands the Buckingham Palace in fine style
Lightning Cloud bounced back to winning form for the first time in nearly two years when landing the Buckingham Palace Stakes under Neil Callan.
The 25/1 chance had been well-supported for a number of similar contests over the last couple of seasons without managing to deliver.
However the Kevin Ryan-trained winner was always travelling strongly and burst clear next to the stands' rail to lead a furlong out.
Dream Tune (7/1) got up in a photo finish for second place, just ahead of Shamaal Nibras (33/1), with fourth-placed Santefisio (40/1) best of those to race on the far side.
"This means a lot because Kevin has been a very good friend to my family," said Callan, riding again as a freelance this season after his role as stable jockey to Roger Varian came to an end at the start of the year.
"I joined him as stable jockey in about 2004 and was there for four years and he is godfather to one of my kids. I'm delighted for him.
"This horse was absolutely swinging along at the furlong-pole. He was pulling my arms out and I had to let him go, but I thought from halfway that we had the edge on our side of the track."
