Paul Nicholls won the Greatwood again with Pacha Du Polder
Pacha Du Polder won a dramatic renewal of the StanJames Supporting Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase at Newbury.
The winner was providing Paul Nicholls with his fifth victory in this contest in six years although it was not the runner that the market expected to lift the trophy with The Knoxs the better fancied of his pair.
Ryan Mahon jumped Pacha Du Polder, who had been disappointing this season, out in front and the pair were rarely (if at all) headed with the first time cheekpieces and better ground seemingly doing the trick.
There was early drama with Mahogany Blaze falling and Big Fella Thanks making an early blunder with Micheal Flips taking a crashing fall on the far side.
The remaining runners were closely grouped at the cross fence but Mahon took several lengths out of the field at the head of the straight and never looked like being caught.
Pepite Rose may have made a race of it but for crashing out at the last ditch but fancied pair Garynella and The Knoxs failed to pick up and it was left to Big Fella Thanks and Tony Star to give vain chase.
"That's my first Graded winner," said Mahon. "He has his good days and his bad days, but he had every chance on a good day and the first-time cheekpieces have really helped him."
