Jessica Harrington: Trains Backbench Blues

Backbench Blues made light of the testing ground to claim the Nijinsky Stakes at Leopardstown.

Jessica Harrington's son of Big Bad Bob had returned a beaten favourite in a handicap on 1000 Guineas day at the Curragh but successfully stepped up to Listed company in the 11 furlong contest.

Always prominent under Fran Berry, the gelding ran on strongly despite wandering markedly in the closing stages in the attritional conditions and the 10-1 chance pulled almost four lengths clear of Macbeth and Karatash.

The third home just edged out his trainer, John Oxx's apparent first string in Curragh maiden winner Aklan but both horses have a number of Pattern race entries further down the line.

Aidan O'Brien's Tower Rock was sent off the 2-1 favourite but the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial second floundered on the ground and finished tailed off.
