Eton Rifles: Listed win in Ireland
David Elsworth's Eton Rifles ran out a ready winner of the Listed Go Racing In Kildare Waterford Testimonial Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday.
The well-backed 5-4 favourite was always in the front rank under Johnny Murtagh and ran on strongly to score by three quarters of a length from Seeharn and Cheviot.
The six year old was having just his second start in Pattern company, and his first for Elsworth, and was winning for the first time at this level having finished second to Harrison George at Redcar just over 12 months ago.
The Pivotal gelding ran out an impressive winner of a valuable handicap at Goodwood in August on his first start for Elsworth before making the frame at Ascot and finishing second in the Ayr Gold Cup.
Elsworth said: "He's a horse that likes to get his toe in and they had plenty of rain here last week.
"He's run four times for me and run with great credit every time. He's still open to improvement and that's not the ceiling of his ability.
"He's just thriving at the moment. This looked a race that he had a good chance in.
"He's in the sales and some lucky fella is going to buy him at Newmarket. The owner doesn't have the same interest in the Flat as the jumps.
"I was very privileged to be given the job of training him and he's been very kind to me."
