Deacon Blues - a first win in Group company.
Wokingham winner Deacon Blues won the Group Three Shadwell Stakes at Newbury.
The well-backed favourite was stepping up to Group company for the first time following his victory in the fiercely competitive Royal Ascot handicap.
The James Fanshawe-trained gelding was always travelling well under Frankie Dettori and, once given his orders, picked up well to run out a ready winner of the six furlong contest which is registered as The Hackwood Stakes.
Markab, a Group One winner last season, produced his best performance of the season to chase the winner home, finishing two and three quarter lengths adrift at the line with a further length and a quarter back to Jimmy Styles with last year's winner Regal Parade only fourth.
"A bit of cut in the ground really helps him," said Fanshawe.
"He was stepping up from a big handicap to a Group race so you never know, but after today he could go for anything.
"I was a bit worried today might be too quick after Ascot so he won't go to Goodwood. He has an entry in the Sprint Cup though."
