Halicarnassus: Goes clear for another Value Bet winner
Top Australian jockey Hugh Bowman enjoyed a smooth success on Mick Channon's stable stalwart Halicarnassus in the bet365 Old Newton Cup.
The seven-year-old entire, tipped at 25/1 by our in-form tipster Ben 'Value Bet' Linfoot, is being retired to stud in Turkey, where his owners are based, after he runs in the Bosphorus Cup in Istanbul in September, which he won in 2009.
The 14-1 chance showed just how much he will be missed at West Ilsley when he took his earnings past £750,000 with a length and a half win over Bourne.
Long-time leader Bowdler's Magic was third, with joint-favourite Mount Athos a close-up fourth.
"He's given a lot of people a lot of fun over the years. You don't get a horse like that very often," said Michael Channon junior, the trainer's son and assistant.
"He deserves his chance at stud and that's where he's going after the Bosphorus Cup. They need a hard horse out there and they do a good job. "
Bowman, who rode Eclipse winner So You Think to two victories in Australia in 2009, added: "He's a brilliant horse and this win means a lot to me as well.
"I rode him at Ascot and he's a lot better in this better ground."
