Gertrude Bell scores in the Lancashire Oaks at Haydock on Saturday afternoon
Gertrude Bell (9-2) looked a fortunate winner of the bet365 Lancashire Oaks at Haydock after the saddle slipped on the odds-on favourite Vita Nova.
The latter's rider Tom Queally did exceptionally well to stay on board and somehow get the filly home into second place.
However, the honours belonged to the John Gosden-trained Gertrude Bell, who now has a Group Two success to add to her two Listed wins.
After Polly's Mark had taken them along, Gertrude Bell hit the front two furlongs out under William Buick and stayed on stoutly to win by a length and a quarter.
Queally's heroics were rewarded with the runner-up spot, a neck ahead of Dorcas Lane.
"She would prefer cut in the ground as she hits the ground hard," said Buick.
"She's won this because she stays well and she's a Group Two winner now."
