Queally: Patient tactics paid off
Principal Role swept through late in the day to win the Listed EBF Kheleyf Hopping Stakes at Newcastle.
Tom Queally rode a very patient race on Henry Cecil's daughter of Empire Maker but his confidence proved well founded as she found top gear from two furlongs out to slice through the field.
She built up a head of steam at the distance and collared Fanditha close home to score cosily by three parts of a length.
The well-backed Piano also found her stride late in the day and kept on well to claim third place.
Cecil's representative William Brown said: "She's come on an awful lot for her first run, her work had improved massively.
"To be honest, with what she was showing us at home we expected her to win.
"We had a bit of a concern if the rain came but it stayed away thankfully.
"It looks like she'll get further but the boss hasn't mentioned a target."
