Deacon Blue: Fends off Waffle in thrilling Wokingham
Deacon Blues (15-2) completed a huge 220-1 double for James Fanshawe when winning the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot.
40 minutes after stablemate Society Rock had won the Golden Jubilee, Johnny Murtagh partnered the four-year-old to a thrilling neck victory over Wafffle.
"It's good to have Johnny on board as he rode Soviet Song to four Group One victories.
"He also rode Frizzante for the same owners as Deacon Blues to win the July Cup.
"After the Golden Jubilee I became a bit more phlegmatic about things, but luck has been on our side.
"We felt this horse would go on the ground - a straight mile at Ascot has been lucky for the yard."
"When I came over to England things didn't work out with David Loder and the first man I bumped into was James Fanshawe.
"I've met some great people along the way and I have a great relationship with James - he's a marvellous trainer."
