Manassas wins the finale.

Manassas wins the finale.

Brian Meehan's Manassas revelled in the soft conditions to win the Buckingham Palace Handicap at Royal Ascot.

Meehan and winning jockey Martin Dwyer were gaining ample compensation following the disappointment of stable companion Theyskens' Theory in the Coronation Stakes.

Courageous and Kieren Fallon gave the field something to aim at as Manassas (12-1) hit the front inside the final furlong.

Excellent Guest (16-1) ran on for second, a length adrift of the winner, while Striking Spirit (50-1) ran a huge race from stall two in third.

Decent Fella (16-1) was fourth.

Meehan said: "I didn't think the ground would really bother him too much.

"He's quite versatile and seems to go on any ground.

"I was more concerned about the week we were having.

"It was the last runner of the meeting for me and he's won, so that's good."

Terrible week

Dwyer added: "We were having a terrible week, but this old boy has pulled it out of the bag for us.

"It's soft, but he's a very tough handicapper.

"He ran well in the Victoria Cup (second) and loves Ascot. He dug deep for me.

"I couldn't see a lot with the rain and my goggles steaming up.

"I kept going until I saw the jam stick (winning post)."
