Pausanias wins under Hughes.

Pausanias wins under Hughes.

Pausanias was an impressive winner of the listed Bet at bluesq.com European Free Handicap at Newmarket.

The Sir Alex Ferguson-owned colt was an uneasy 100-30 chance in the market thanks to the support for Elzaam (15-8 favourite) who weakened out of contention and finished out of the places.

Despite being out in the middle of the track Pausanias quickened well late on to catch Rerouted (6-1) and win by a cosy length.

Barry Hills' Rerouted had the run of the race out in front but he had to settle for second in the end.

Ferguson was en-route to Germany to watch Manchester United's likely Champions League semi-final rivals Schalke, but Hannon said: "I was worried the ground might be too fast for him and that he'd cope with seven furlongs as he really wants a mile.

"He'll come on a lot for that. I'm not sure what he'll do, but he's in the German Guineas and that could be a race he ends up in."
