Howard Johnson's Companero (16-1) came out on top after a stamina-sapping renewal of the totesport.com Eider Handicap Chase at Newcastle.
The 11-year-old, revitalised in first-time blinkers, was never headed in the four-mile-one-furlong contest, run in desperately heavy ground.
Having jumped for fun under Peter Buchanan, he saw off the challenge of Giles Cross before the third-last and despite barely being able to clamber over the final fence, claimed the near £19,000 first prize by 30 lengths. Morgan Be was the only other finisher.
