Howard Johnson: Sprang a Southwell surprise with Hold Fast
Howard Johnson's Hold Fast turned over long odds-on favourite Bellvano in the starsportsbet.co.uk Novices' Chase at Southwell.
Bellvano was sent off the 1-5 favourite for his eagerly-anticipated introduction to fences and travelled well for much of the contest under Tony McCoy.
However whilst Hold Fast (6-1) and Brian Hughes appeared to be at the market leader's mercy rounding the turn for home, Bellvano pecked on landing when jumping the second last, giving Hold Fast a chance to renew his challenge.
The two of them had a real set-to in the closing 100 yards but it was Howard Johnson's gelding who took the race by a neck.
"I just wanted to get my lad jumping to start with but once they stopped in front, I took it up with a circuit to run as he's a horse who stays further," said Hughes.
"He jumped great down the back and in the straight I could hear Bellvano coming, but in fairness, my little horse stuck his head out and Bellvano couldn't get by him."
