Bronze Cannon powers to victory.
John Gosden's Bronze Cannon inflicted a surprising defeat upon Casual Conquest in the stanjames.com Jockey Club Stakes.
Casual Conquest (10-11 favourite) was placed in the English and Irish Derby and with market rival Spanish Moon failing to go into the stalls, he had only two opponents to beat in the Group Two contest.
Dermot Weld's colt still had every chance to pass Jimmy Fortune and Bronze Cannon (7-1), who kept finding a little more to win by three lengths.
Gosden said: "What happened down at the start was unfortunate, but it has played into our hands on this occasion.
"We've set a nice pace, and when the other horse (Casual Conquest) came breathing down his neck, he's found more - and full credit to him."
Fortune added: "He's a bonny little horse and likes this track.
"He's got a heart as big as a lion."
Weld was not too downbeat after Casual Conquest's second-place finish. "He's ran a good race, but as I've said beforehand, he was ring-rusty," reflected the Irish handler.
"The ground is good, safe ground, but may just be on the fast side for him at the moment.
"We'll now take each day as it comes."
