Brian Hughes: Keen on Bishops Heir

All roads lead to Kelso on Sunday where ten runners face the starter for the Persimmon Homes Scottish Borders National.

And Brian Hughes is hoping the prize will stay on home soil as he fancies the chances of James Ewart's Langholm raider Bishops Heir.

The jockey said: "His comeback run at Kelso was good as he was beaten just over a length and we've stuck cheekpieces on to sharpen him up. He's got good form over hurdles and fences at the track and we're expecting a big run. This has been the plan and it would be a grand race to win for a Scottish stable."

James Reveley's family have won the Borders National several times and he is looking to add to that record on Scotswell, trained at Jedburgh by Harriet Graham.

"He's got good hurdle form at Kelso and I quite fancy him to be honest," Reveley said. "The trip should suits as he stays well, and I'm looking forward to riding him."

Top-weight and likely favourite is the novice Imperial Vic who will be having just his fourth spin over fences. The Northumberland raider is partnered by Grand National-winning pilot Ryan Mania.

And another with a squeak in a wide-open race is Ros Castle, trained by Rose Dobbin, the daughter of the sponsor.

It's good to see Sam Twiston-Davies at Kelso and he partners hat-trick-seeking Night Alliance in the John Wade Always Right Champion Chase.

Trained at Worcester by Dr Richard Newland, the gelding is bidding to follow up wins last month at Ascot and Ffos Las.

St Boswells owners Paul and Clare Rooney will fancy their chances of landing the Scotty Brand Paris Pike Novices' Chase with recent Aintree runner-up Beeves who represents the Donald McCain/Jason Maguire combination.
