Toscanini remains on target for Royal Ascot despite being beaten at Naas on Monday.

Mick Halford's three-year-old had no answer to Anthem Alexander in the Group Three Lacken Stakes and ended up finishing third.

Halford was inclined to blame the soft ground and is still aiming at a run in either the Commonwealth Cup over six furlongs or the Jersey Stakes over seven.

"James Doyle was happy with Toscanini but said that he was never comfortable on the ground - he just rolled around on it - and there was a very strong headwind," the County Kildare handler told www.godolphin.com.

"He finished his race well but the ground went against us and I am sure that there is better to come from the horse.

"We were keen to get a run into him before Royal Ascot and the plan is still to head there for either the Commonwealth Cup or the Jersey Stakes."
