Horse racing news: Moheet to run in Investec Derby

Moheet is to be a rare runner from the Richard Hannon stable in the Investec Derby at Epsom on Saturday week.

The colt was eighth to Gleneagles in the Qipco 2000 Guineas after finishing third to stablemate Kool Kompany in the Craven Stakes.

Connections believe the son of 2002 winner High Chaparral will be suited by stepping up in distance but cannot be certain he will last out the mile and a half.

"I realise he's a long shot, but he is held in high regard by Richard (Hannon) and the team," Harry Herbert, racing manager to owners Al Shaqab Racing, told At The Races.

"He ran well in the Guineas. I think the horse is crying out to go further. Whether he wants to go a mile and a half we will have to see, but he's worked very well.

"The chat from Everleigh was that he had gone very well last weekend. I'm not saying he can win a Derby, but he will be a lot more competitive than his price suggests."

Frankie Dettori has ridden Moheet in all his three starts to date but Al Shaqab's retained jockey is teaming up with ante-post favourite Golden Horn at Epsom.

That gives the opportunity to Pat Dobbs, who rides Moheet in all his work at the Hannon yard.

"Pat Dobbs will ride Moheet and he rides him at home all the time. He knows the horse like the back of his hand," said Herbert.

"Pat, quite rightly, is getting more rides for Richard and has had the highest regard for him for years. He'll do a great job."
