Robert Winston poised to miss Tropics ride in July Cup

Robert Winston is set to miss the ride on Tropics in the Darley July Cup on Newmarket after suffering a setback in his recovery from injury.

Winston suffered a heavy fall after three horses came to grief in a nasty incident at Doncaster late last month, but after being taken to hospital with back pain, his injuries were not thought to be serious.

However, the jockey has since undergone a second scan, which has revealed "partial fractures" and his comeback date is now in the hands of the British Horseracing Authority.

Winston's agent Lee Newton said: "They originally gave Robert Wednesday as a planned comeback date, but he's had a second opinion scan and that has shown up some partial fractures.

"The results have been passed on to the BHA medical advisor and basically it's in his hands.

"Robert feels fine in himself and hopefully we'll have a better idea on Wednesday about how long he might be out for.

"I would say it's 99 per cent certain he won't ride this week, which is disappointing."

Winston's expected absence has left trainer Dean Ivory, who runs Lancelot Du Lac as well as Tropics in the July Cup, considering riding plans.

He said: "It's a big shame for Robert and I'm very sad for him.

"He gets on so well with the horse, but you can't go into a race like this unless you're 100 per cent.

"We're just looking into the jockey situation, but I think Pat Cosgrave will probably ride one of our horses. I'm not sure which at this stage.

"Which other jockey we'll use, I'm not sure, as nobody knows where they are at the moment.

"There will be plenty of good jockeys around, with a few coming over from Ireland as well, so we'll just have to wait and see.

"I'm happy with both horses. I just hope the ground isn't too firm for Tropics."
