Runaway MotoGP championship leader Marc Marquez returned to his usual position at the top of the timesheet following second practice for Sunday's British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

The 21-year-old defending champion had won all of the opening 10 races before finishing fourth last time out in the Czech Republic - where Repsol Honda team-mate and fellow Spaniard Dani Pedrosa broke his streak.

But Marquez once again proved to be quicker than any of his fellow competitors as he clocked a fastest time of two minutes 2.126 seconds to sit over half a second faster than anyone else in the field.

Pedrosa, looking to make it back-to-back wins and keep his compatriot from the top step once more, could only manage ninth-quickest as Stefan Bradl got closest to Marquez on his LCR Honda.

Yamaha's Valentino Rossi is third in the championship standings behind the Repsol duo but was lingering down in 13th place.

Andrea Dovizioso went third-fastest for Ducati, with Bradley Smith the quickest of the British riders in fourth place - Yonny Hernandez was fifth for Pramac Racing with team-mate Andrea Iannone down in seventh.

Scott Redding was the only other home racer to make the top 10 as he set the sixth-fastest time, with Alvaro Bautista and Aleix Espargaro sandwiching their fellow Spaniard Pedrosa.
