Olympic champion and world No 1 Nicola Adams will begin her quest to add a Commonwealth gold to her collection as women’s boxing makes its debut at Glasgow 2014.

After a thrilling start to the track and field action on Sunday, Monday sees boxing take the spotlight as Leeds flyweight star Adams bids to write history once again after becoming the first women’s boxing gold medallist at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Adams’ England team-mate Natasha Jonas has dropped down to the lightweight category, where she will come up against Olympic champion Katie Taylor of Ireland.

Golds up for grabs

Athletics (men's 100m, shot put, Para-sport 100m T37 and Para-sport discus F42/44; women's 100m, hammer throw and Para-sport 100m T12)
Badminton (mixed team final)
Lawn Bowls (men's pairs and triples)
Shooting (men's 50m pistol and 50m rifle prone events, women's trap and 50m rifle prone events)
Squash (men's and women's singles)
Swimming (men's 200m back, 50m breast, 100m fly and Para-sport 200m SM8 medley, women's 800m free, 100m free, 100m breast and 200m fly)
Table Tennis (men's team)
Weightlifting (women's 69kg, men's 85kg)

Savannah Marshall, the 2012 world champion, fights for England at middleweight having come through shoulder surgery during the winter - she'll start her campaign in the Round of 16 against Indian Pooja Rani.

In the pool, Adam Peaty will aim to add the 50m breaststroke title to the 100m gold he won on Saturday, while Jazz Carlin will carry Welsh hopes in women's 800m freestyle where she will face Scots Camilla Hattersley and Hannah Miley.

Box office

England’s Adam Gemili will hope to seize his moment in the 100-metre limelight with Jamaican superstars Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake opting to sit out the box office event of track and field, but the Briton will face stern competition from Jamaicans Nickel Ashmeade, Jason Livermore and Kemar Bailey-Cole.

Meanwhile, there will be an all-England duel in the squash men’s singles final with world champion and Team England flag-bearer Nick Matthew taking on team-mate James Willstrop in Monday’s gold medal showdown.

Englishwoman Laura Massaro will have to overcome defending women’s champion Nicol David if she is to take squash gold, though the Malaysian, who has topped the world rankings for eight years, heads into the final as favourite.

In hockey, defending women’s champions Australia take on England in a group-stage match which is likely to set the tone for both nations’ competition. Australia were the highest placed Commonwealth nation at the recent Rabobank Hockey World Cup, while England finished a lowly 11th.

Husband and wife Chris and Gabby Adcock will look to take home gold for England when they take on Malaysia in the badminton mixed doubles final.
