Sheffield Tigers skipper Simon Stead broke his upper arm and femur after a horror crash in the final race of his team’s Premier League win at Rye House on Saturday.
Stead was leading but fell on the exit of the fourth bend and was unavoidably struck by team-mate David Bellego.
He was airlifted to hospital as a precautionary measure after on-track attention, with initial reports of a possible left arm fracture and left hip injury.
Sheffield’s first away win at Rye House in over a decade was marred not only by Stead’s crash in Heat 15 but also by the home side’s Steve Boxall having to withdraw from the meeting after crashing heavily into a fence when attempting to pass Ty Proctor for second place in Heat 10.
Co-promoter Damien Bates said: “Our thoughts are with Simon and David, it’s a massive blow to the team but more importantly we wish the lads well.
“Our thanks go to Craig (Cook) for stepping in on Thursday and we are actively looking at what options there may be available for us to sign someone on a short-term basis.”
The meeting was abandoned at 50-37 in the visitors’ favour with no re-run of the final race.
