The Rock: the Brahma Bull scooped the WWE Title at Royal Rumble 2013
The Royal Rumble is the most unpredictable night of the WWE year.
ROYAL RUMBLE 2014
1am, Sun, Jan 26 (Mon)
Live on Sky Sports Box Office
The event is always filled with anticipation aplenty and terrific title tussles, while in the Royal Rumble match itself we witness surprise entrants, shock eliminations and the Road to WrestleMania take a dramatic new turn.
This year's extravaganza comes your way on Sunday, January 26 on Sky Sports Box Office but before you tuck into that, read our report of the 2013 event in Phoenix, Arizona below which included big wins for The Rock and John Cena...
Published January 28, 2013:
The Rock survived CM Punk's array of manoeuvres and an attack by the Shield to pluck the WWE Championship at Sunday's Royal Rumble pay-per-view.
The Great One - competing in his first championship match in over a decade - engaged in a brutal brawl with Punk in Phoenix, Arizona, but his hopes of claiming gold appeared to be shattered when the lights went out and the Shield interfered, allowing Punk to pin his rival.
Vince McMahon had stated beforehand that should the rogue trio interject themselves into the WWE Title bout, Punk would be stripped of the title - and the WWE Chairman appeared post-match to carry out his promise, much to the champion's chagrin.
But The Rock, still retrieving his breath after the Shield's triple powerbomb, urged McMahon to restart the clash instead, and then proceeded to hit Punk with the People's Elbow to capture the 10th world title of his illustrious career - and end the Chicagoan's 434-day reign with the strap.
The Brahma Bull could now face John Cena at WrestleMania XXVIIII after the latter outlasted 29 other men to win the 2013 Royal Rumble and earn a guaranteed WWE or World Heavyweight Title opportunity at April's showpiece event in New Jersey.
Cena: won the Royal Rumble match for the second time last year
Cena, who entered the multi-man melee at number 19, lastly ousted Ryback to secure his spot in the WrestleMania event, at the end of a match notable for the surprise returns of Chris Jericho, the Godfather and Goldust.
Kofi Kingston avoided elimination in the 2012 Royal Rumble by performing a handstand and wowed the crowd again at the US Airways Center, using a mixture of Tensai, the Spanish announce desk and a chair to prevent his feet from hitting the floor.
NXT star Bo Dallas impressed in the Rumble, too, lasting over 20 minutes and eliminating Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett - before the irate Brit yanked him out of the ring in the way of retribution.
Alberto Del Rio maintained his grip on the World Heavyweight Championship, meanwhile, by beating Big Show in a Last Man Standing match; the challenger failing to make the 10-count after Del Rio's personal ring announcer, Ricardo Rodriguez, had duct-taped his feet to the ring ropes.
Plus, Team Hell No bested Team Rhodes Scholars to extend their spell with the WWE Tag Team Titles and Antonio Cesaro kept his United States Championship intact by conquering former titlist The Miz.
