The Great One defeated Cena at WrestleMania 28 in Miami, but the grapplers will battle once again on April 7, after the former plucked world title gold from CM Punk and the latter emerged victorious from the 2013 Royal Rumble.
The Rock and Cena have competed in a combined 18 WrestleManias and combatted some of the greatest Superstars ever to enter the WWE and, ahead of their showdown in New Jersey, skysports.com runs through the pair's history at the Showcase of the Immortals...
WrestleMania 20 - BEAT Big Show for the United States Championship
Cena made his WrestleMania debut at the iconic Madison Square Garden in 2004, when he faced the gargantuan Big Show for the United States Championship, the first time the strap had been defended at the Show of Shows. The rookie was at a significant size disadvantage but whilst the referee was removing Cena's chain from the ring, the Massachusetts-born grappler smacked Big Show with a pair of brass knuckles, dropped the World's Largest Athlete with an Attitude Adjustment and then recorded the pin-fall to snare his maiden title in the WWE.
WrestleMania 21 - BEAT JBL for the WWE Championship
The Cenation Leader pinched gold at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, just as he had done at WrestleMania a year earlier, to win his first World Championship. Cena bested Kurt Angle in a Number One Contender's match at No Way Out to earn his 'Mania match with JBL, which began weeks of tension between the two. The Chain Gang soldier, who lost his United States strap to the Wrestling God's ally Orlando Jordan in the build-up to the contest, vandalised JBL's limo and was subsequently arrested, but had the last laugh at by deposing the champion at the Showcase of the Immortals.
WrestleMania 22 - BEAT Triple H to retain the WWE Championship
Cena went from gaining a big belt at 'Mania to retaining one when he edged Triple H in a cracker at the Allstate Arena in Chicago in April 2006. The Doctor of Thuganomics plucked the WWE Championship from Edge at the Royal Rumble and the watched on with interest as eight men battled to face him for the strap on the biggest stage. Triple H ultimately prevailed in the tournament, which also featured the Big Show, Shelton Benjamin, Ric Flair, Chris Masters, Kane, Carlito and Rob Van Dam, but saw his championship hopes dashed when Cena made him tap out.
WrestleMania 23 - BEAT Shawn Michaels to retain the WWE Championship
Friends become rivals in 2007 when Cena and Michaels met for the biggest prize in sports entertainment. The pair had worked as a unit in the lead-up to their match, beating the team of Batista and The Undertaker at No Way Out and Rated RKO members Edge and Randy Orton on Raw, but on the final Raw before 'Mania, the Heart Break Kid turned on Cena and hit him with a deadly Superkick. The Icon did not irreparably damage his adversary, though, and just like his pal Triple H 12 months previous, lost to Cena after being caught in the STF submission manoeuvre.
WrestleMania 24 - LOST TO WWE Champion Randy Orton and Triple H in a Triple Threat Match
Cena returned from an injury hiatus to win the 2008 Royal Rumble, entering the 30-man melee as the final entrant and lastly eliminating Triple H. In a break from tradition, he opted to use his title shot at No Way Out instead of WrestleMania and took on reigning WWE Champion Randy Orton. The Viper purposefully disqualified himself in the clash to prevent Cena from nabbing his gold, but after the latter beat Orton the next night on Raw, he joined the Master of the RKO and Triple H in the WrestleMania main event, which Orton won after punting the Game and pinning Cena.
WrestleMania 25 - BEAT Edge and Big Show to win the World Heavyweight Championship
Cena endured double trouble for the second year running when he battled both World Heavyweight Champion Edge and Big Show in Houston, Texas. The West Newbury native, who had lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Edge inside the Elimination Chamber at No Way Out, engineered his way into the match after discovering that the Rated-R Superstar's wife Vickie Guerrero was having an affair with the Big Show, and he ended up regaining the gold by pinning the World's Largest Athlete at 'Mania for the second time in six years.
WrestleMania 26 - BEAT Batista to win the WWE Championship
Everything seemed rosy for the Cenation Leader at Elimination Chamber in 2010 when he covered Sheamus to win the WWE Championship, but Vince McMahon, as punishment for Cena aiding his bitter rival Bret Hart, immediately granted Batista a title shot and the Animal plucked the gold in just over 30 seconds. Cena, however, earned a rematch at 'Mania after defeating Batista on Raw and bested the former Evolution star again at the Showcase of the Immortals to become an eight-time world champion and take his win-loss record at the spring extravaganza to 6-1.
WrestleMania 27 - LOST TO WWE Champion The Miz
Cena was on the losing side in Atlanta, Georgia thanks in large part to The Rock. The Chain Gang Soldier and the Great One had traded plenty of verbal barbs once the latter was named as the host of WrestleMania 27, and on the final Raw before the big show, Cena handed the Brahma Bull an Attitude Adjustment. The People's Champion then cost his rival the WWE Championship inside the Georgia Dome by levelling him with a Rock Bottom, allowing The Miz to keep hold of the title he had acquired the previous November - and sowing the seeds for a first-ever Rock-Cena showdown.
WrestleMania 13 - BEAT The Sultan to retain the Intercontinental Championship
Dwayne Johnson's bow at WrestleMania was a successful one as he vanquished The Sultan to preserve his grip on the Intercontinental Title. The Great One, then known as Rocky Maivia, was overpowered for portions of the bout by his weightier rival but eventually sucker punched his opponent with a flying cross-body and roll-up pin to record the victory. The Sultan and his managers, Bob Backlund and The Iron Sheik, attempted to beat down the triumphant Maivia post-match, but the young gun was rescued by his legendary father, former WWE Tag Team Champion, Rocky Johnson.
WrestleMania 14 - BEAT Ken Shamrock to retain the Intercontinental Championship
The Brahma Bull retained the Intercontinental strap again at 'Mania 14 at the end of an all-out brawl with Ken Shamrock in Boston. The Rock hit his fellow grappler with the steel steps whilst the referee's back was turned and Shamrock retaliated in kind by catching his enemy in the Ankle Lock, suplexing Maivia's Nation of Domination comrades Kama Mustafa, Mark Henry and D'Lo Brown and attacking some officials. The Nevadan was disqualified for his actions, and even though The Rock was carried out on a gurney, his pain was tempered by the fact he remained with title.
WrestleMania 15 - LOST TO Stone Cold Steve Austin in WWE Title Match
The Rock's storied WrestleMania rivalry with Stone Cold Steve Austin began in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1999, when he lost the WWE Championship to the Rattlesnake. The match regularly strayed from the ring, with Austin being chocked by some cable and Rock being dropped through the Spanish announce desk, while both Vince McMahon and Mankind got involved, too. The Rock thought he had the contest won after administering a Rock Bottom, but was eventually undone by a Stone Cold Stunner and saw his third reign with the sough-after belt come to a conclusion.
WrestleMania 16 - LOST TO WWE Titlist Triple H, Mick Foley and Big Show in Fatal Four Way
There was a McMahon in every corner of the WWE Championship match at WrestleMania 16, with Vince backing up The Rock, Stephanie supporting Triple H, Linda cheering on Mick Foley and Shane aiding the Big Show. Foley and Big Show were pinned, leaving The Rock and The Game as the last two competitors standing, but Vince then turned his back on the Brahma Bull, hitting him with two chair shots, allowing Triple H to cover him and retain his title. The Most Electrifying Man in all of Entertainment responded, however, by Rock Bottoming Vince, Shane and Stephanie.
WrestleMania 17 - LOST TO Stone Cold Steve Austin in WWE Title Match
Rock-Austin round two commenced in Texas in 2001 after the People's Champion bested Kurt Angle at No Way Out and the Rattlesnake tossed Kane over the top rope to win the Royal Rumble. Their No Disqualification meeting, much like at 'Mania 17, was all action, with both men bleeding after being struck by the ring bell and levelling each other with myriad finishing manoeuvres. Austin, though, would then hit Rock with a chair provided by former arch enemy Vince McMahon, striking the Brahma Bull a multiple times before pinning his stricken rival and supping a trademark beer.
WrestleMania 18 - BEAT Hollywood Hulk Hogan
It was legend versus legend in Toronto, Canada as the The Rock locked horns with Hollywood Hulk Hogan. The duo had been sworn enemies in the lead up to the match, with Hogan's New World Order cronies Kevin Nash and Scott Hall attacking the Great One, but after their near-17 minute duel, which The Rock won by pinfall following a People's Elbow, they shook hands. The Brahma Bull then helped Hogan fend off an attack from Nash and Hall and once they had sent their foes, packing Rock and Hogan posed in the ring, to the delight of the fans in attendance.
WrestleMania 19 - BEAT Stone Cold Steve Austin
The Rock-Austin trilogy concluded at WrestleMania 19 in Seattle, Washington - and the Rock, at last, emerged victorious. He returned to the WWE after a six-month break in February 2003 and criticised the fans for naming Stone Cole as the Superstar of the Decade and bemoaning the fact he had never beaten the Rattlesnake at the showpiece event. The Rock eventually got his shot at redemption, though, and despite failing to pin Austin after hitting his People's Elbow, he sealed the deal with three bone -shattering Rock Bottoms to end what proved to be Austin's final match.
WrestleMania 20 - LOST TO Evolution whilst partnering Mick Foley
Johnson scarcely appeared on WWE television after losing to former WCW powerhouse Goldberg at Backlash in 2007, but the People's Champion made sure he was back for WrestleMania 20 in New York. The Brahma Bull teamed up with former Rock 'n' Sock Connection partner Mick Foley to take on Evolution stars Randy Orton, Batista and Ric Flair in a handicap match, but the duo's reunification would prove unsuccessful when Foley was pinned by Orton after receiving a devastating RKO.
Cena versus Rock: WrestleMania 28
Cena's duel with the Rock at WrestleMania 28 was announced the day after WrestleMania 27and in the intervening year plenty of quips were thrown. The rivals even teamed together to take on The Miz and R-Truth at Survivor Series but on April 1, 2012, they went one-on-one in an instant classic. The Rock, competing in his first singles match in a decade, kicked out of two Attitude Adjustments and Cena survived a Rock Bottom and a People's Elbow, but when the latter attempted a People's Elbow of his own, he was caught by a third Rock Bottom and suffered his second 'Mania defeat in succession.
