WWE Main Event: Sheamus beats Alberto Del Rio to retain United States Championship

Damien Sandow has another run-in with Bret "The Hitman" Hart

Sheamus retained the United States Championship on Main Event following a hard-hitting Last Man Standing Match with Alberto Del Rio.

The Celtic Warrior put The Essence of Excellence out for the count following a Brogue Kick to keep hold of the belt he nabbed from Dean Ambrose in May - but he did not win easily.

Sheamus was caught in Del Rio’s Cross Armbreaker and careered both himself and his opponent – who had earned his title shot by conquering Dolph Ziggler on Monday Night Raw - into a table.

But a brutal boot eventually downed Del Rio as Sheamus – one of 13 confirmed entrants in the Intercontinental Championship Battle Royal at Battleground – mirrored his win over Mexico’s Greatest Export on Friday’s episode of Smackdown.

However, another Battle Royal competitor, Damien Sandow, had a rotten time on Main Event after being clocked by WWE Hall of Famer Bret “The Hitman” Hart for the second evening in succession.

Sandow interrupted Hart’s appearance on Chris Jericho’s Highlight Reel dressed as Shawn Michaels, one of the men involved in the infamous Montreal Screwjob at Survivor Series in 1997, in which The Hitman lost the WWE Title.

But the onetime Mr Money in the Bank was quickly made to pay for his mockery as he was punched by the Canadian legend and placed in the Sharpshooter as Jericho looked on with glee.

Elsewhere, Nikki Bella – an enemy of Stephanie McMahon since her twin sister Brie quit WWE – was beaten by Natalya, Cameron, Naomi, Eva Marie and Summer Rae in a five-on-one handicap match.

Marie’s DDT ended Bella’s valiant performance but she was saved further punishment after the bell when Naomi prevented Cameron from launching an attack and sent the latter scuttling up the entrance ramp.
