Kyle Okposo held his nerve to guide the New York Islanders to a 5-4 shootout victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Friday's NHL action.

The Penguins recovered from 3-1 and 4-3 down to force over-time, but left the CONSOL Energy Center empty-handed after Okposo slotted home in the third round of the shootout after Brandon Sutter had missed moments before.

Matt Martin, Nikolay Kulemin, Ryan Strome and Nick Leddy scored in normal time for the Islanders, while the Penguins were on target courtesy of Sutter, Blake Comeau, Nick Spaling and Patric Hornqvist.

The two teams face one another in New York on Saturday and the Penguins will be targeting revenge after the Islanders ended their three-game winning sequence.

The Boston Bruins also needed a shootout to overcome the Columbus Blue Jackets but eventually ran out 4-3 winners.

Alex Khokhlachev wrapped up victory for the Bruins in the seventh round of the shootout, after they had recovered from being 2-0 down to take a 3-2 lead with goals from Dennis Seidenberg, Matt Fraser and Daniel Paille in the first 11 minutes of the final period.

Jack Johnson forced over-time with the Blue Jackets' third goal of the night two minutes later after Ryan Johansen and Nick Foligno had given them a two-goal lead in the first period.

Second-period goals from Adam Henrique and Tuomo Ruutu earned the New Jersey Devils a 2-0 win against the Edmonton Oilers.

New Jersey goaltender Cory Schneider made 29 saves to secure the shutout victory.

Meanwhile, the Buffalo Sabres' home game against the New York Rangers was postponed earlier in the day due to heavy snow in the Buffalo area.
